About Bührle Collection
One of Europe's finest private Impressionist collections, featuring masterworks by Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, and Cézanne, now housed in the Kunsthaus Zürich extension.
The Emil Bührle Collection is one of the most outstanding private art collections in the world, assembled by the Zurich industrialist Emil Georg Bührle between 1936 and 1956 and comprising approximately 200 works of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. The collection is anchored by exceptional works from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including masterpieces by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, and Paul Gauguin. Among the highlights are Van Gogh's "The Sower," Monet's water-lily series paintings, and Renoir's celebrated figure works. After spending decades in a private villa near Lake Zurich, the collection was transferred on long-term loan to the new Chipperfield wing of the Kunsthaus Zürich, which opened in 2021. The collection has been the subject of provenance research regarding the origins of some works during the Nazi era, and the Kunsthaus has committed to transparent scholarly research on these questions. Whatever the complications of its history, the artistic quality of the assembled works places this collection among the finest anywhere in Europe.
