Paradeplatz, "Parade Square", stands at the midpoint of Bahnhofstrasse and serves as Zurich's symbolic financial centre. The name refers to its historical use as a military parade ground and cattle market before it was transformed into an elegant square in the 19th century. The square's architectural showpiece is the Confiserie Sprüngli, occupying a building on the southwest corner since 1859, its tea room and chocolate counter remaining one of the great Zurich institutions. The palatial banking buildings surrounding the square, particularly the historic UBS and Credit Suisse headquarters (now UBS since the 2023 merger), have long symbolised Switzerland's role as the world's pre-eminent private banking centre. Major tram lines converge here, making it the busiest tram intersection in the Swiss network. The square itself is relatively modest in scale, but its strategic position at the confluence of Bahnhofstrasse's luxury establishments and the world's most concentrated banking wealth gives it an outsized symbolic importance in global finance.
