Zürich Hauptbahnhof, known simply as the HB, is the hub of the entire Swiss Federal Railways network and the busiest railway station in Switzerland. The magnificent main hall, with its soaring vaulted ceilings and warm stone walls, was designed by Jakob Friedrich Wanner and opened in 1871. More than 450,000 passengers pass through daily, making it one of the highest-footfall railway stations in Europe. The station connects seamlessly to an underground tram network and S-Bahn suburban rail system that reaches throughout the canton. Underground, the Shopville shopping area and the famous Auer Chäpeli, a Gothic chapel preserved in the station crypt, add unexpected cultural depth. Every December, the station's grand hall is transformed into Europe's largest covered Christmas market, the Christkindlimarkt, with hundreds of illuminated stalls selling seasonal crafts, food, and glühwein beneath a spectacular light installation. Above the concourse hangs an enormous installation by sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle, a guardian angel in bright colours that has become one of the station's best-loved landmarks.
