About Langstrasse
Zurich's most diverse and alternative neighbourhood, a multicultural street packed with immigrant communities, independent bars, street art, and vibrant nightlife that contrasts sharply with the banking district.
Langstrasse, "Long Street", is Zurich's most culturally diverse and unpolished neighbourhood, running through Kreis 4 and Kreis 5 west of the main station. Where the rest of the city shows a prosperous, orderly face, Langstrasse has always been the place where Zurich's edges show: immigrant communities from Portugal, Spain, the Balkans, Africa, and Asia have made their homes here, and the street vibrates with the energy of multiple cultures coexisting. The ground floors alternate between Portuguese and Turkish grocery stores, Spanish tapas bars, African restaurants, kebab houses, Vietnamese noodle shops, and some of the city's best independent bars and music venues. Street art covers entire building facades. The nightlife is genuinely unpretentious and often excellent, small clubs, live music, bars open until dawn. In recent years, gentrification has begun to exert pressure, but Langstrasse retains its essential character: gritty, genuine, multicultural, and alive in a way that more sanitised parts of Zurich are not. The contrast with the banking temples of Paradeplatz, just a 15-minute walk away, is one of the most striking in any European city.
Did you know? Langstrasse has been the main immigrant reception neighbourhood of Zurich for over a century, with successive waves from Portugal, Spain, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Africa, Vietnam, and beyond.
