About Schipfe & Limmat Quarter
The most atmospheric riverside quarter of the old town, where medieval guild artisans once worked and today small workshops, galleries, and independent shops line the Limmat bank.
The Schipfe is the most atmospheric and least-visited stretch of Zurich's old town, a narrow lane running along the west bank of the Limmat River, between the water's edge and the rising slopes of the Lindenhügel. In medieval times this was the artisan quarter of the city: dyers, rope makers, leather workers, and craftsmen of all kinds worked in the workshops that lined this narrow waterfront strip, using the river both for power and for waste disposal. Today the Schipfe retains an intimate, slightly hidden quality that makes it a discovery for visitors who leave the main tourist paths. Small studios, independent jewellers, bookbinders, art galleries, and workshop spaces occupy the ground-floor premises, and the old half-timbered and stone buildings lean companionably over the narrow lane. The Limmat runs just a few metres away, and the reflections of the old buildings in the water make this one of the most photogenic corners of the city. The adjacent Lindenhügelweg path winds up through the gardens and terraces of the Lindenhügel, connecting the riverside lane to the hilltop Lindenhof square above.
Did you know? The Schipfe was Zurich's medieval artisan quarter, where dyers, rope-makers, and leather workers used the Limmat River for both power and waste disposal.
