About The Sea Gate

The harbour gateway of the old town, built around 1571 and framing a genuine Roman arch. It carries the Venetian lion outside and the city's patron saint within, and celebrates the great sea victory at Lepanto.

The Sea Gate, Morska vrata, also called the Gate of St Chrysogonus, is the old town's gateway toward the harbour. Set up around 1571 to 1573, it was built around the surviving remains of a genuine Roman triumphal arch, generally thought to have been raised by a Roman woman, Melia Anniana, in memory of her husband.

On its outer face spreads the winged Lion of St Mark of Venice, and on the inner side a relief of St Chrysogonus, the city's patron, watches over those entering the town. A Renaissance panel records the Christian fleet's victory over the Ottoman navy at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, and a plaque honours the Dalmatian sailors who fought there. The gate is part of Zadar's UNESCO-listed Venetian defences.
