About Nin

A tiny island town in a lagoon north of Zadar, cradle of Croatia's medieval kings and home to the ninth-century Holy Cross church, fondly called the smallest cathedral in the world, with old salt pans nearby.

Nin is a small historic town set on an islet, about five hundred metres across, in a shallow lagoon roughly seventeen kilometres north of Zadar, joined to the mainland by two old stone bridges. Settled by the Liburnians and built up by the Romans as Aenona, it became in the early Middle Ages the first political and religious centre of the Croatian state, the seat of its earliest bishops, among them Gregory of Nin.

Its jewel is the ninth-century Church of the Holy Cross, a whitewashed pre-Romanesque building so small it is fondly called the smallest cathedral in the world. Nearby lie centuries-old salt pans, still worked by sun, sea and wind and open to visitors, and the shallows of Queen's Beach, famous for a dark healing mud.
