About People's Square

The old town's main meeting place since the Middle Ages, lined with cafes and framed by the Renaissance City Loggia and the City Guard with its clock tower. Here Zadar still gathers to celebrate.

People's Square, Narodni trg, has been the civic heart of Zadar since the Middle Ages, when it was known as the Great Square, the Platea Magna, the centre of secular and civic life as the churches clustered around the forum nearby. Later called the Square of the Lords, it took its present name after the Second World War.

Two fine Venetian-era buildings face each other across it. The City Loggia, rebuilt in 1565, was an open hall for public business and the keeping of the city's official measures, and now serves as an exhibition gallery. Opposite stands the City Guard of 1562, its tall clock tower added around 1800, beside the small eleventh-century Church of St Lawrence. The square remains the place where Zadar comes together to celebrate.
