About Kalelarga
The old town's broad main street, affectionately called Kalelarga, tracing the line of the Roman main road. Lined with shops and cafes, it is the stage of Zadar life, older, locals say, than the city.
Kalelarga is the nickname, loved by everyone in Zadar, for the old town's main street, officially Široka ulica, the Wide Street. The name comes from the Venetian Calle Larga, and locals have used it under every ruler. The street follows the line of the long main road of the Roman town, running from near the Land Gate up toward the cathedral.
Old documents call it simply the great street, and a local book gives it the fond title the street older than the city. Its line goes back to the Roman grid, and perhaps earlier. Lined today with shops, cafes and worn, gleaming paving, it is the old town's chief promenade and, along with People's Square, the stage on which Zadar celebrates its victories.
