About Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina)

The Museum of the Royal Tombs at Vergina, an underground hall inside the Great Tumulus of Aigai, where the tomb attributed to Philip II of Macedon and its gold treasures are shown in place.

In 1977 the archaeologist Manolis Andronikos found four tombs under the Great Tumulus, two of them never disturbed since antiquity. The museum, built inside the rebuilt mound and opened in 1997, keeps the tombs where they were found and shows their finds, among them a golden larnax with a sixteen-rayed star.

One ticket covers the museum, the Royal Tombs, the palace, the theatre and the burial ground. From November to March the site is closed on Tuesdays. The tombs are seen behind glass in a dark, cool hall.
