About Rialto Bridge

The oldest bridge across the Grand Canal, completed in 1591 on 226 wooden piles, its single stone arch lined with portico shops selling gold, jewellery, and souvenirs.

The Rialto Bridge is the oldest and most famous of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal. For centuries, a wooden bridge at or near this point was the only crossing of the canal, and the Rialto, the commercial heart of Venice, grew up around it. The current stone bridge was built between 1588 and 1591 to the design of Antonio da Ponte, who won the commission over competing designs by Michelangelo and Palladio.

The bridge consists of a single stone arch 28 metres wide, rising 7.5 metres above the water, supported on 226 wooden piles driven into the muddy lagoon bottom. It is wide enough to carry two rows of shops along each side and a central passage, making it a building as much as a bridge. The shops under the porticos traditionally sold gold and jewellery, a tradition partly maintained today.

The view from the bridge in either direction, up the canal toward the fish market, or down toward the great palaces, is one of the most photographed in Venice. The bridge features in countless paintings, including Canaletto's famous Grand Canal views.

Did you know? Michelangelo and Palladio both submitted designs for the Rialto Bridge competition but lost to the relatively unknown Antonio da Ponte in 1588.
