About Piazza San Marco
Napoleon called it the 'drawing room of Europe', Venice's only square bears the title Piazza, surrounded by the Procuratie arcades, one of the oldest cafés in the world, and the façade of St Mark's Basilica.
Piazza San Marco is the ceremonial and social heart of Venice, the only public space in the city formally designated Piazza, all others are merely campi or campielli. The square is flanked on three sides by the arcaded Procuratie Vecchie and Procuratie Nuove, the long administrative buildings of the Republic that now house exclusive shops and the legendary Caffè Florian, which has been serving coffee here since 1720.
At the far end rises the magnificent facade of St Mark's Basilica, with the Campanile reaching 99 metres on the right. Napoleon, who annexed Venice in 1797, reportedly called the piazza 'the finest drawing room in Europe' and demolished the church of San Geminiano to add a Napoleonic wing.
The square is renowned for flooding, acqua alta regularly covers it to ankle or knee depth, and for its pigeons, though feeding is now banned. The combination of the Basilica, the Campanile, the Doge's Palace, and the glittering water of the lagoon just beyond makes this one of the great public spaces on earth.
Did you know? Piazza San Marco is Venice's only public space officially called 'Piazza', all other open spaces in the city are called campi (fields), a reminder of their pre-urban origins.
