About Gallerie dell'Accademia

Venice's supreme art museum, housing the world's finest collection of Venetian painting from the 14th to 18th centuries, including masterpieces by Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese.

The Gallerie dell'Accademia occupy a complex of former religious buildings, the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità, the adjacent church, and the monastery of the Lateran Canons, on the south bank of the Grand Canal at the foot of the Accademia Bridge. The collection was founded in 1807 when Napoleon ordered the suppression of religious institutions and the concentration of their artworks.

The gallery traces the full arc of Venetian painting from the Byzantine-influenced altarpieces of Paolo Veneziano in the 14th century through the golden age of the 15th and 16th centuries. Essential works include Giovanni Bellini's serene polyptychs, Giorgione's mysterious The Tempest (c. 1508), Titian's Presentation of the Virgin (1538), and Veronese's vast Feast in the House of Levi, originally commissioned as a Last Supper before the Inquisition objected to its irreverent detail.

The gallery also preserves Vittore Carpaccio's extraordinary cycle of nine canvases depicting the Legend of St Ursula, among the finest narrative paintings of the Renaissance.

Did you know? Veronese was summoned before the Inquisition for painting dogs, jesters, and drunken soldiers in what was supposed to be the Last Supper. He simply changed the title to Feast in the House of Levi.
