Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, universally known as the Frari, is the great Gothic church of the Franciscan friars in Venice, begun in 1340 and consecrated in 1492. It is one of the largest churches in Venice, rivalling the Dominican SS. Giovanni e Paolo across the city.
The interior contains an extraordinary concentration of great art. Above the high altar hangs Titian's Assumption of the Virgin (1518), his first monumental commission and arguably the most dramatic altarpiece in Venice, the Virgin rising in a swirl of crimson drapery toward God, with the apostles gesturing wildly below. In the Pesaro Chapel, Titian's Madonna di Ca' Pesaro (1526) shows a revolutionary diagonal composition, the Madonna displaced from the traditional central position.
Giovanni Bellini's triptych in the sacristy, with the Virgin and Child surrounded by saints, is among the most serene and perfectly composed works of the Venetian Renaissance. The church also contains the elaborate tomb monuments of two Doges and the tomb slab of Claudio Monteverdi, who was choirmaster at St Mark's Basilica.
