About Murano Island
The island of glass-making since 1291, a 30-minute vaporetto ride from Venice, where master glassblowers create extraordinary objects using centuries-old millefiori and filigree techniques.
Murano is a cluster of islands in the Venetian lagoon about 1.5 kilometres north of Venice proper, connected internally by bridges and to Venice by regular vaporetto services. The island became the centre of Venetian glass production in 1291 when the Republic ordered all glass furnaces moved from the city to Murano, reducing the fire risk in densely built Venice.
For centuries Murano's glassmakers held a monopoly on European fine glassmaking, and their techniques were closely guarded state secrets. Glassmakers enjoyed extraordinary privileges, their daughters could marry Venetian noblemen, and the masters themselves were considered nobility, but they were also forbidden from leaving Venice on pain of death, as the Republic feared losing its commercial advantage.
Today the island maintains dozens of working glassblowing studios and furnaces open to visitors, as well as the excellent Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum) in the 17th-century Palazzo Giustinian. The millefiori technique, creating patterns from bundles of coloured glass rods, and the filigrana technique (threads of white or coloured glass within clear glass) remain the island's most celebrated specialities.
Did you know? Murano glassmakers were forbidden from leaving Venice on pain of death, the Republic considered their techniques so valuable that emigrating craftsmen were threatened with assassination.
