About Torcello Island

The oldest settled island in the Venetian lagoon, now almost deserted, with the magnificent 7th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta housing stunning Byzantine mosaics and the mysterious Throne of Attila.

Torcello is the oldest of the inhabited Venetian lagoon islands, settled by inhabitants fleeing the mainland from barbarian invasions in the 5th and 6th centuries. At its medieval peak, the island had a population of perhaps 20,000 people and was the dominant power in the lagoon before Venice itself rose to prominence. Today, following centuries of depopulation and malarial swamps, only a handful of people live there permanently.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 639 AD, the oldest building in the Venetian lagoon, contains some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in Italy outside of Ravenna. The apse mosaic of the Virgin Orant and the vast Last Judgment mosaic covering the entire west wall are among the most powerful religious artworks in northern Italy.

Also in the grass-grown centre of the island stands a simple stone chair known as the Throne of Attila, traditionally (but probably incorrectly) said to have been used by the 5th-century Hun leader. Ernest Hemingway reportedly loved the island and came here to duck hunt in the lagoon marshes.

Did you know? Torcello's Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was founded in 639 AD, making it the oldest building in the entire Venetian lagoon, 455 years older than St Mark's Basilica.
