About Doge's Palace

The magnificent Gothic seat of Venetian power for over a thousand years, housing the world's largest oil painting and connected to the infamous Bridge of Sighs.

The Doge's Palace, Palazzo Ducale, was the residence of the Doge of Venice and the administrative and judicial centre of the Venetian Republic for over a thousand years. The current Gothic building dates primarily from the 14th and 15th centuries, with its distinctive pink Verona marble facade and open loggia creating one of the most recognisable silhouettes on the Venetian waterfront.

The palace's interior is a sequence of increasingly grand rooms demonstrating the political theatre of Venetian governance. The climax is the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, the Great Council Chamber, whose ceiling bears Jacopo Tintoretto's Paradise, completed around 1592. At roughly 22 metres wide and 9 metres tall, it is the largest oil painting in the world, depicting heaven populated by over 500 figures.

The palace also housed Venice's prisons, accessible via the famous Bridge of Sighs. Visitors can tour the secret prison cells where Giacomo Casanova was famously incarcerated in 1755 before his equally famous escape.

Did you know? The Doge was elected through a ten-round process of alternating lottery and voting, specifically designed to prevent any single family from controlling the outcome.
