About St Olaf's Church

Estonia's tallest church, its lightning-struck spire has burned three times; its disputed legend as once the world's tallest building draws crowds, and the tower platform opens April to October.

St Olaf's Church, or Oleviste kirik, stands in Tallinn's Lower Town and is first recorded in 1267, though its origins are believed to date to the twelfth century. Dedicated to King Olaf II of Norway, the patron saint of seafarers, it was extensively rebuilt in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. At about 123.7 metres it is the tallest church building in Estonia, and its tower carries a public observation platform at roughly sixty metres, open seasonally from 1 April to 31 October.

The tower has been struck by lightning about a dozen times, with major fires in 1625, 1820 and 1931, and the church has burned down three times. A widely repeated claim that its spire once made it the tallest building in the world, sometimes cited at 159 metres, is disputed and treated as unverified by scholars. Originally Roman Catholic and later Lutheran, the church was handed to a Baptist congregation by the Soviet regime in 1950 and remains Baptist today.

Did you know? St Olaf's tower has been hit by lightning around a dozen times; strikes set off fires that gutted the spire in 1625, 1820 and 1931, and the whole church has burned down three times.
