About St Mary's Cathedral (Dome Church)
The white Dome Church is the oldest church in mainland Estonia, its interior crammed with more than a hundred Baltic-German coats of arms above a floor of medieval tombstones.
St Mary's Cathedral, known as the Dome Church or Toomkirik, stands on Toompea hill and is the oldest church in Tallinn and mainland Estonia. A stone basilica was built here between 1229 and 1240, replacing an earlier wooden church, and the building was enlarged into a three-aisled hall between about 1330 and 1430. Originally Roman Catholic, it became Lutheran after the Reformation reached Tallinn in 1561, and it is today the seat of the Archbishop within the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
It was the only building on Toompea to survive the great fire of 1684 and was restored over the following century, gaining its Baroque spire in 1779. The carved pulpit and altarpiece are works of the sculptor Christian Ackermann. The interior walls carry more than one hundred carved and painted coats of arms of Baltic-German noble families, and the floor is paved with medieval tombstones. The cathedral was designated a national cultural monument in 1995.
Did you know? When the great fire of 1684 destroyed most of Toompea, the Dome Church was the only building on the hill left standing, which is one reason its medieval and later monuments survive so well.
