About Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

An onion-domed Orthodox cathedral raised on Toompea during Russian rule and long resented by Estonians as an imperial symbol, now facing the parliament directly across Lossi plats.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox church on Toompea hill, built between 1894 and 1900 to designs by the Saint Petersburg architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky in the Russian Revival style. Dedicated to the medieval prince and saint Alexander Nevsky, it rises from a Finnish granite base to five onion domes crowned with gilded iron crosses. Its interior holds three gilded wooden iconostases and icons painted on copper and zinc in Saint Petersburg, and its eleven bells, the largest weighing some fifteen tonnes, were cast in the same city.

The cathedral was erected during a period of Russification and was widely seen by Estonians as a symbol of imperial Russian domination. In the interwar years the authorities debated its removal, and a demolition proposed for 1 May 1929 was cancelled. Administered today by the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, it again became the subject of public debate after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Did you know? The cathedral's eleven bells were all cast in Saint Petersburg, the largest weighing roughly fifteen to sixteen tonnes, and their peal still carries clear across the rooftops of Toompea and the Old Town below.
