About Great Guild Hall (Suurgildi hoone)

A stately 15th-century Gothic hall built for Tallinn's richest merchants and second only to the Town Hall, now home to the Estonian History Museum on Pikk street.

The Great Guild Hall (Suurgildi hoone) is a Gothic building on Pikk street in Tallinn's Old Town, built between 1407 and 1410 with its interiors completed in 1417. It was erected for the Great Guild, the association of the city's leading Hanseatic merchants, which operated from at least the 14th century until 1920. With its facade of blind arches and prominent portal, it is regarded as one of the most distinguished public buildings of medieval Tallinn, second only to the Town Hall among the town's secular buildings.

The building's main hall measures about 365 square metres, its vaults carried on pillars with decoratively carved capitals. Since 1952 it has housed the Estonian History Museum (Eesti Ajaloomuuseum), and in 2013 it was awarded the European Heritage Label. It stands within the Historic Centre of Tallinn, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.

Did you know? The Great Guild admitted only established merchants, generally married and German-speaking, making membership one of the surest signs of power in medieval Tallinn; the brotherhood lasted from at least the 14th century until 1920.
