About St Nicholas' Church (Niguliste Museum)
A bomb-scarred medieval church, reborn as the Niguliste Museum, now home to church silver, gilded altars and the surviving fragment of Bernt Notke's celebrated medieval Dance of Death.
St Nicholas' Church (Niguliste) was founded around the mid-13th century by German merchants from Westphalia and dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron of sailors and fishermen. On 9 March 1944 it was severely damaged during the Soviet air raid on Tallinn, and fire destroyed most of the interior apart from St Anthony's Chapel. Restoration lasted from 1953 until 1981, and a further fire damaged the tower in 1982.
The building is no longer an active church. It houses the Niguliste Museum, a branch of the Art Museum of Estonia devoted mainly to medieval and early-modern ecclesiastical art, and also serves as a concert hall. Its collection includes the surviving fragment of Bernt Notke's late-15th-century Danse Macabre, a high altar retable made in 1478-1481 in Hermen Rode's Lubeck workshop, and a silver chamber displaying the treasures of Tallinn's guilds and the Brotherhood of the Blackheads. It stands within the UNESCO-listed Old Town.
Did you know? Only the opening scene of Notke's Danse Macabre survives; the original painting was around thirty metres wide, a whole procession of the living led toward death by grinning skeletons.
