About Church of the Holy Spirit (Puhavaimu kirik)

A small whitewashed Gothic church that wears an ornate 1684 clock on its outer wall, and was the first in Estonia to hold its services in the Estonian language.

The Church of the Holy Spirit (Puhavaimu kirik) is a medieval Lutheran church in Tallinn's Old Town, first mentioned in 1319 and completed around 1380. It is a Gothic hall church with a whitewashed facade, crow-stepped gables and an octagonal tower whose spire took its current form in 1630. The church holds a particular place in Estonian cultural history as the first church in the country to hold services in the Estonian language, and the place where the first printed extracts of the catechism in Estonian were produced in 1535.

On the north exterior wall hangs an ornately carved and painted wooden clock, made in 1684 by the woodcarver Christian Ackermann and often described as the oldest public clock in Tallinn. Inside, the winged main altar is a work by Bernt Notke dated 1483, depicting the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The chronicler Balthasar Russow served here as a pastor. The church lies within the Historic Centre of Tallinn, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.

Did you know? The church's carved wooden clock, made in 1684, carries a stern inscription reminding the town that it strikes the passing hours equally and honestly for maidservant, master and mistress alike.
