About Church of St Sofia
The ancient red-brick basilica that gave the city its name, a sixth-century church over a Roman necropolis, with the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and its eternal flame beside it.
The Church of St Sofia is one of the oldest buildings in the city and the church that gave Sofia its name. The present red-brick cross basilica is believed to date from the sixth century, the age of Justinian and of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople; it is dedicated to Holy Wisdom (Greek sophia), not to a female saint. In the fourteenth century the city took its name from the church, replacing the older Slavic name Sredets.
The church stands over the necropolis of Roman Serdica, and an underground museum reveals the graves and the remains of earlier churches, some with fragments of fresco. Under Ottoman rule it served as a mosque, then was abandoned after earthquakes and later restored. Beside it burns the eternal flame of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, guarded by a stone lion, with lines by the poet Ivan Vazov.
