About Rotunda of St George

A round, red-brick Roman building of the early fourth century, the oldest building in Sofia, hidden in a courtyard among government palaces, with layers of frescoes beneath its dome.

The Rotunda of St George is the oldest preserved building in Sofia, a round red-brick hall from the early fourth century, from the days when Serdica was a residence of the emperors Galerius and Constantine. A Roman building whose original purpose is still discussed, it became a church in the early Christian centuries, with a dome rising nearly fourteen metres over a square base.

Its walls carry several layers of fresco, from the tenth to the fourteenth century, and a ring of tall prophets crowns the dome. Under the Ottomans it was turned into a mosque and the paintings were covered over, to be uncovered and restored only in the twentieth century. The rotunda stands in a quiet courtyard among the Presidency and a grand hotel, surrounded by the excavated streets of Roman Serdica, and is still a working church.
