The Ivan Vazov National Theatre is Bulgaria's national theatre and its oldest and most prestigious, standing in the centre of Sofia with its ornate facade facing the City Garden. The resident company was founded in 1904, and the building, designed by the Viennese theatre architects Fellner & Helmer, opened in 1907. It takes its name from Ivan Vazov, the great Bulgarian writer.
The facade is a feast: six columns carry a pediment with a gilded relief of Apollo among the muses, flanked by two towers crowned with sculpture. The theatre has twice risen from disaster, rebuilt after a fire in 1923 and again after wartime bombing in 1944. In front lie the pools and fountains of the City Garden, Sofia's oldest public garden, making this one of the most photographed corners of the city.
