About Borisova Gradina
Sofia's oldest and best-loved park, laid out in the 1880s and named for a prince who became king, a green expanse of tree-lined alleys, lakes and monuments that is the city's favourite escape.
Borisova Gradina, or Boris's Garden, is Sofia's oldest and best-known park, approved in 1882 and laid out from the 1880s by the Swiss gardener Daniel Neff. It was named after Prince Boris, later Tsar Boris III; under communism it was called the Park of Freedom, and its old name was restored in 1992. It covers roughly three square kilometres on the eastern side of the centre.
Its long tree-lined alleys, planted with oaks and chestnuts, lead to lakes and lily ponds, a rose garden and scattered monuments to famous Bulgarians. Visitors row boats on Lake Ariana, and within the park stand the Vasil Levski National Stadium, the Sofia TV Tower and sports grounds. Green and shady in summer, golden in autumn, it is where Sofia comes to walk, run, picnic and escape the city.
