About Russian Church of St Nicholas

A jewel-like Russian church of 1914 with five gilded onion domes and glowing coloured tiles, built for Sofia's Russian community, where believers still leave written prayers at a revered tomb in the crypt.

The Russian Church, officially the Church of St Nicholas the Miracle-Maker, is a small, exquisite Russian Orthodox church on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, built as the church of the Russian embassy and the city's Russian community. Designed by Mikhail Preobrazhensky in the Russian Revival style, inspired by the churches of seventeenth-century Moscow, it was begun in 1907 and consecrated in 1914.

Its five domes are coated in gold, its walls glow with coloured majolica tiles, and its bells were a gift of Tsar Nicholas II. In the crypt lies Archbishop Seraphim, who led the Russian Orthodox community in Bulgaria until his death in 1950 and was declared a saint in 2016; believers come to his tomb to pray and drop written petitions into an urn, asking, they say, for their wishes to be granted.
