About Moorish Castle

A medieval hilltop fortress built by the Moors in the 8th and 9th centuries, offering spectacular views over Sintra, the Atlantic coast, and Lisbon, its serpentine walls climbing steeply through ancient forest.

The Castelo dos Mouros, Moorish Castle, is a medieval fortification built on the rocky crags of the Serra de Sintra by the Moors during their occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, most likely constructed in the 8th and 9th centuries. The castle was taken from the Moors by King Afonso Henriques of Portugal in 1147, the same year he captured Lisbon. The castle's serpentine walls follow the contours of the rocky ridge for nearly a kilometre, enclosing an area that once sheltered a garrison and a small village. The views from the battlements are extraordinary: on clear days you can see the Atlantic coast from Cascais to Setúbal, Lisbon to the south, and across to Pena Palace on the adjacent peak. The castle fell into disrepair after the medieval period and was partly restored in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II. It is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape of Sintra.
