About Palácio de Seteais

An elegant late 18th-century Neoclassical palace with one of the finest views in the Sintra hills, now a luxury hotel, its triumphal arch and formal gardens are among the most harmonious architectural compositions in Portugal.

Palácio de Seteais is one of the most graceful buildings in the Sintra hills, a late 18th-century Neoclassical palace of great elegance, set on a terrace with sweeping views across the Atlantic coastal plain toward Cabo da Roca. Built in 1787 by the Dutch consul Daniel Gildemeester, the palace was later acquired by the Marquis of Marialva, who added the distinctive triumphal arch connecting the two wings of the building. The name 'Seteais' means 'seven sighs' in Portuguese, and various romantic legends surround its origin. The palace is now operated as the Hotel Tivoli Palácio de Seteais, one of the most distinguished luxury hotels in Portugal, non-guests can visit the terrace, the arch, and the grounds, and the hotel restaurant serves traditional Portuguese cuisine with the full Sintra view.

Did you know? The name 'Seteais' means 'seven sighs' in Portuguese, one legend says it refers to the sighs of Portuguese negotiators who signed an unfavourable treaty here, though the true etymology of the name is unclear.
