About Palácio Nacional de Queluz

The 'Portuguese Versailles', an exquisite 18th-century Rococo palace and formal gardens with a canal lined with azulejo tile panels, built as the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family.

Palácio Nacional de Queluz, often called the 'Portuguese Versailles', is one of the finest examples of 18th-century Rococo architecture in the Iberian Peninsula, a palace of extraordinary elegance and formal grandeur built as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family. Construction began in 1747 under Prince Pedro, later King Pedro III, with architects Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and Jean-Baptiste Robillion. The palace's formal gardens are among the finest in Portugal: geometrical parterres, fountains, statues, and topiary hedges form a series of outdoor rooms of great refinement. The Azulejo Canal, a canal whose retaining walls are lined entirely with painted azulejo tile panels depicting naval battles, hunting scenes, and pastoral landscapes, is one of the most extraordinary decorative features of any garden in Europe. The palace is easily accessible from Lisbon, located only 15 km west of the capital near Sintra.

Did you know? Queen Maria I, Portugal's first reigning queen, spent the last decades of her life at Queluz Palace suffering from mental illness, her anguished cries were reportedly heard by visitors, and the palace became associated with her tragic decline.
