About Monserrate Palace
An extraordinary Victorian Romantic palace combining Moorish, Gothic, and Indian architectural styles, set in a spectacular exotic garden, built for the English eccentric William Beckford and later for Sir Francis Cook, who planted one of the finest gardens in Portugal.
Monserrate Palace is the most architecturally eclectic building in the Serra de Sintra, a mid-Victorian fantasy of extraordinary beauty that combines Moorish, Gothic, and Indian styles in a single coherent vision. The estate was first developed by the English writer William Beckford in the early 19th century, who wrote the Gothic novel Vathek and was one of the wealthiest and most eccentric men in England. He briefly leased the Monserrate estate, planted its famous gardens, and then left. Later in the century, English industrialist Sir Francis Cook purchased the property and commissioned English architect James Thomas Knowles to design the present palace (completed 1863). Cook also employed an international team of botanists and gardeners to create the extraordinary 30-hectare garden that surrounds it, one of the finest collections of exotic plants in the Iberian Peninsula. The palace interior features extraordinary carved limestone and stucco rooms of Moorish and Indian inspiration.
Did you know? The eccentric English writer William Beckford, who briefly lived at Monserrate in 1793 and planted its first gardens, was considered the wealthiest commoner in England, and was forced to leave England under a cloud of scandal involving his personal life.
