About Judería y Antigua Sinagoga Mayor
The old Jewish quarter below the cathedral, and its great medieval synagogue, seized on a false pretext, turned into the convent of Corpus Christi, and emptied by the expulsion of 1492.
The southern streets below Segovia's cathedral, around the Calle de la Judería Vieja, were the medieval Jewish quarter, home to one of the largest and most important Jewish communities in the Kingdom of Castile. Its Old Main Synagogue (Sinagoga Mayor), built in Mudéjar style with a prayer hall of horseshoe arches on brick pillars, closely resembled the synagogue of Santa María la Blanca in Toledo. In the early 15th century, following a false host-desecration accusation of 1410, the synagogue was confiscated and turned into a church, later the convent of Corpus Christi, still an enclosed convent today. A fire in 1899 gutted the interior, which was reconstructed. Segovia's Jews were expelled with all of Spain's in 1492. The quarter and its buildings lie within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.
