About Real Casa de Moneda
Philip II's water-powered Royal Mint on the Eresma, one of the oldest industrial buildings in Europe, where the river itself, turning great rolling mills, struck the coins of an empire.
The Real Casa de Moneda (Royal Mint) of Segovia, on the banks of the river Eresma, was built for King Philip II between 1583 and 1588 to designs by his architect Juan de Herrera. It was Spain's first mechanised mint and the first owned directly by the Crown, replacing hand-struck coinage with water-powered rolling mills. The roller-press technology came from Hall in the Tyrol, sent by Philip's Habsburg cousin Archduke Ferdinand II; the machinery crossed Europe in a great convoy in 1585. A dam and waterwheels on the Eresma drove the mills until a Bourbon-era screw press replaced them in 1771, and the mint operated until 1869. Often called one of the oldest examples of industrial architecture in Europe and the oldest surviving mint in Spain, it is now a museum with restored, working hydraulic machinery. It lies within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.
Did you know? A dam on the Eresma turned great waterwheels that drove rolling mills, so the river itself minted the coins of the Spanish empire, mechanised money-making that replaced striking each coin by hand.
