About Iglesia de San Esteban

The 'queen of the Byzantine towers', reckoned the tallest Romanesque church tower in Spain, six stages of stone arcades climbing above one of Segovia's quietest, least-visited squares.

The Iglesia de San Esteban, in the upper old town beside the former Episcopal Palace, is a late-12th/early-13th-century Romanesque church famous above all for its bell tower, reckoned the tallest Romanesque church tower in Spain at roughly 53-56 metres. Rising in six stages ringed with arcading and topped by a rooster weathervane, it was nicknamed 'la reina de las torres bizantinas,' the queen of the Byzantine towers, by the writer José María Quadrado in 1884. A Romanesque porticoed gallery of carved columns runs along the church's flanks. An 18th-century fire led to a Baroque interior, and after a lightning fire in 1896 the tower was dismantled and rebuilt in the early 20th century. Declared a national monument in 1896, it lies within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.

Did you know? San Esteban's tower is reckoned the tallest Romanesque church tower in Spain; a 19th-century writer crowned it 'the queen of the Byzantine towers,' and the name has stuck ever since.
