About Iglesia de San Martín

A 900-year-old Romanesque church wrapped in a shaded arcaded porch, hiding a Baroque dead-Christ by Gregorio Fernández, and facing the bronze statue of Segovia's rebel hero, Juan Bravo.

The Iglesia de San Martín is one of the finest of Segovia's many Romanesque churches, standing on the Plaza de Medina del Campo, on Calle Juan Bravo between the aqueduct and the cathedral. Documented by 1117, it has Mozarabic roots and a Romanesque body of three naves, with a brick lantern-tower and a triple-apsed east end. A porticoed gallery of arches on carved columns wraps three of its sides, the hallmark of Segovian Romanesque, and its west portal carries statue-columns of Old Testament figures. Inside is a celebrated reclining dead Christ (Cristo yacente) attributed to the Baroque sculptor Gregorio Fernández. On the square in front stands the bronze statue of Juan Bravo, who led Segovia in the Revolt of the Comuneros (1520-21); it lies within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.

Did you know? The covered gallery of carved arches wrapping three sides of San Martín is the signature of Segovian Romanesque: a shaded public porch where the medieval parish met, traded, sheltered and buried its dead.
