About The Towers of San Gimignano
The medieval towers of San Gimignano, about fourteen tall stone tower-houses that rise above a hill town in Tuscany, survivors of the many built by rival families in the Middle Ages.
Tradition says that about seventy-two tower-houses once stood here, built by rich merchant families as homes, stores and signs of power. About fourteen survive. They give the town its famous skyline, and since 1990 its historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The towers are seen from the streets and squares at any time, free. Only the Torre Grossa, the tallest, can be climbed, with the civic museum ticket. The views at sunset from the Rocca di Montestaffoli are among the best.
