About Torre Grossa and the Civic Museum

The Torre Grossa, at about 54 metres the tallest tower of San Gimignano, finished in 1311, climbed from the town hall, where the civic museum shows frescoes and paintings of Siena and Florence.

The tower was built by the commune between 1300 and 1311, beside the Palazzo Comunale. In the town hall, the Sala di Dante recalls the visit of the poet as an envoy of Florence in 1300, and holds a Maestà painted by Lippo Memmi in 1317. The art gallery has works by Benozzo Gozzoli, Filippino Lippi and Pinturicchio.

One ticket covers the town hall, the art gallery and the tower, and is valid for a few days. Hours are shorter from November, and the town hall and tower close for about six weeks in January and February. The climb is steep.

Did you know? The Torre Grossa of San Gimignano, about fifty-four metres high, was built by the town government between 1300 and 1311 to stand above the family towers.
