About Collegiata of San Gimignano
The Collegiata of San Gimignano, the main church of the town, consecrated in 1148, whose walls are covered with fourteenth-century frescoes of the Bible and whose chapel holds frescoes by Ghirlandaio.
Although it is often called the Duomo, the Collegiata has never been a cathedral. Inside, Bartolo di Fredi painted the Old Testament on one wall, and the New Testament on the other is attributed to Lippo and Federico Memmi. In the chapel of Santa Fina, Domenico Ghirlandaio painted the life of a young local holy girl.
The Collegiata needs a ticket, and hours are shorter from November. It closes for part of January and February, and visits can stop at short notice for services. Dress modestly.
