About Rocca di Montestaffoli and Vernaccia
The Rocca di Montestaffoli, the ruined fortress built by Florence on the highest point of San Gimignano, now a garden with views, and the home of Vernaccia, the town's famous white wine.
Florence built the fortress in the 1350s, after San Gimignano placed itself under its rule; only its walls survive. Inside, a villa hosts tastings of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a white wine recorded here in 1276. In 1966 it became the first Italian wine to receive the DOC status, the official mark of origin.
The fortress garden is open and free. Wine tastings in the villa are by appointment. Its walls give one of the best views of the town's towers, especially at sunset.
Did you know? Vernaccia di San Gimignano is first recorded in 1276, when the town taxed every load of the wine sent outside its walls.
