About Kinderdijk Windmills
A UNESCO World Heritage Site 15 km from Rotterdam, 19 historic 18th-century windmills in the Dutch polder landscape, the most iconic windmill site in the world.
Kinderdijk is the most celebrated windmill site in the world and one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Netherlands. Located about 15 km east of Rotterdam, the site contains a collection of 19 windmills built around 1740, all within a compact polder landscape of drainage canals, green meadows, and waterways. These windmills were built to pump excess water out of the Alblasserwaard polder, keeping the low-lying land dry and habitable, a function that defines the entire Dutch relationship with water and land. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Several of the windmills are still inhabited by families, continuing a tradition of living and working in the mills that dates back centuries. Visitors can cycle or walk along the mill-lined canal paths, go inside working mills, and take boat tours through the waterways. The view at sunset, with the mills reflected in still water, is one of the most photographed scenes in the Netherlands.
