About De Rotterdam (OMA/Rem Koolhaas)
Rem Koolhaas's monumental 2013 "vertical city", three interconnected towers on the Wilhelminapier containing offices, apartments, and a hotel in 160,000 m².
De Rotterdam, completed in 2013, is the most ambitious architectural achievement on the Wilhelminapier waterfront and one of the largest buildings in the Netherlands. Designed by Rem Koolhaas and his practice OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), the complex consists of three interconnected towers totalling 160,000 square metres of floor area across 44 floors. The towers contain offices, apartments, a hotel, restaurants, and public spaces. What makes De Rotterdam visually distinctive is its stepped, cascading facade: each tower is slightly offset from the others, creating an interlocking skyline composition of shifting volumes. Koolhaas described his concept as a "vertical city", a self-sufficient urban district condensed into a single building. The complex stands on the Wilhelminapier, the finger-shaped peninsular that juts into the Nieuwe Maas opposite the city centre, alongside Hotel New York and the Erasmusbrug.
Did you know? At 160,000 m² across 44 floors, De Rotterdam is the largest building in the Netherlands and functions as a self-contained "vertical city".
