About Delfshaven
Rotterdam's last surviving historic neighbourhood, a 17th-century harbour district with canal houses, the church from which the Pilgrim Fathers departed in 1620.
Delfshaven is the only district in Rotterdam that survived the devastating 1940 German bombing almost intact, making it the sole neighbourhood where visitors can experience the historic city that once existed across the entire centre. The district dates from the 14th century, when it served as the official harbour of the nearby city of Delft. Its most famous moment came on 22 July 1620, when a group of English Separatists, the Pilgrim Fathers, boarded the Speedwell at this harbour, planning to sail to the New World. The Speedwell proved unseaworthy, forcing them to transfer to the Mayflower in Plymouth, England, before finally crossing the Atlantic. The Pelgrimvaderskerk (Pilgrim Fathers' Church) still stands here, a remarkably evocative monument to that departure. Today Delfshaven retains its 17th-century canal, drawbridges, and warehouses, and hosts restaurants, cafés, a jenever distillery, and galleries in its historic buildings.
