About Vatican Museums
One of the world's greatest museum complexes, 54 galleries, 7 km of corridors, and 70,000 artworks including the Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms, and the Sistine Chapel.
The Vatican Museums represent one of the most extraordinary collections of art and antiquities in the world. Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century when he placed the Laocoön statue (discovered in 1506) in the Belvedere courtyard, the collection grew over centuries through papal acquisitions and excavations to encompass 54 galleries along 7 kilometres of corridors.
Highlights include the Pio-Clementino Museum with ancient Greek and Roman sculptures; the magnificent Gallery of Maps (1580–83), a 120-metre corridor with 40 topographical maps of Italy in fresco; the Raphael Rooms, four chambers painted by Raphael for Julius II featuring the School of Athens; and the Pinacoteca with paintings by Leonardo, Caravaggio, and Titian. The journey ends at the Sistine Chapel. The Vatican stores around 70,000 works in total, only a fraction of which are displayed. Over six million visitors pass through annually, making it one of the world's most visited museums.
Did you know? The Vatican Museums display about 70,000 works, but hold an estimated 70,000 more in storage, if you spent one minute on each work on display, it would take you three months of continuous viewing.
