About Piazza Navona
Rome's most elegant Baroque oval, built over Domitian's stadium, centred on Bernini's spectacular Fountain of the Four Rivers and ringed by outdoor cafés and artists.
Piazza Navona is Rome's most celebrated Baroque square, a long, elegant oval whose shape preserves the outline of Domitian's stadium, built here in 86 AD for athletic competitions. The piazza retains the exact proportions of the ancient track, which seated some 30,000 spectators.
The square's centrepiece is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, the Fountain of the Four Rivers, created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1651 for Pope Innocent X. Four colossal river gods represent the great rivers of the four known continents: the Nile (Africa), the Ganges (Asia), the Danube (Europe), and the Río de la Plata (Americas). An Egyptian obelisk topped with a dove crowns the composition.
Borromini's magnificent Sant'Agnese in Agone church flanks the square. The two architects' rivalry was legendary, each reportedly designed their figures to mock the other's work across the piazza, though this colourful story is probably apocryphal. Today the square is one of Rome's great pedestrian gathering places, lined with restaurants, artists, and street performers.
Did you know? The piazza was flooded every August weekend in the 17th–18th centuries, the fountains' drains were blocked and Romans waded ankle-deep to cool off while nobles watched from their carriages.
