About Borghese Gallery

Rome's most exquisite art museum, a cardinal's pleasure villa holding Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, Canova's Venus Victrix, and masterworks by Caravaggio and Raphael.

The Galleria Borghese houses one of the world's most concentrated collections of artistic masterpieces in one of Rome's most beautiful settings. The collection was assembled by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V, who had an extraordinary eye for contemporary talent, he was among Bernini's first and most important patrons, and also acquired works by Caravaggio (including several the artist had painted for other clients who refused them).

The villa was built between 1612 and 1625 as a suburban pleasure retreat. Its twenty ground-floor rooms display the cardinal's sculpture collection, including six early works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini executed between 1618 and 1625: the Rape of Proserpine, Aeneas and Anchises, David, Apollo and Daphne, and the Truth Unveiled by Time. The first floor contains paintings including six Caravaggios, works by Raphael, Titian, Rubens, and Canova's famous portrait of Pauline Borghese as Venus Victrix.

Entry is strictly limited to two-hour slots; advance booking is essential. This limitation, though frustrating, ensures an intimate experience impossible in larger museums.

Did you know? Bernini's Apollo and Daphne was so astonishingly lifelike that a Cardinal had a couplet from Ovid inscribed on the base to justify the pagan subject matter to Church authorities.
