About Arch of Constantine

Rome's largest triumphal arch (315 AD), celebrating Constantine's victory at the Battle of Milvian Bridge, standing immediately beside the Colosseum.

The Arch of Constantine is the largest and best-preserved triumphal arch in Rome, erected in 315 AD by the Senate to celebrate Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge three years earlier. Constantine famously claimed that a divine sign, a cross in the sky accompanied by the words 'In hoc signo vinces' (In this sign, conquer), inspired his victory, an event central to the Christianisation of the Roman Empire.

At 21 metres high, 25.7 metres wide, and 7.4 metres deep, the arch is remarkable for its extensive reuse of sculpture from earlier imperial monuments. The attic reliefs depicting Trajan's Dacian Wars, the Hadrianic roundels showing hunting and sacrifice, and the Aurelian panels from Marcus Aurelius's campaigns are all spoliated from earlier buildings, either because time was short or because Constantine wished to associate himself with Rome's greatest emperors.

The arch stands at the beginning of the ancient triumphal route, adjacent to the Colosseum, on the ancient course of the Via Sacra.

Did you know? Most of the arch's sculpture was recycled from monuments of Trajan, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius, the original emperors' faces were re-carved to look like Constantine.
