About Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità)
An ancient marble mask set in the portico of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, legend says it bites off the hand of anyone who places it inside while telling a lie.
The Bocca della Verità, Mouth of Truth, is one of Rome's most famous and beloved curiosities: a large ancient marble disc carved in the form of a face, with eyes, nose, and an open mouth. It now rests against the outer wall of the portico of the medieval church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin.
The disc is probably a Roman sewer cover or part of a decorative fountain from the first century AD, possibly representing the river god Oceanus or the Tiber. Its original purpose remains debated. The legend that it bites off the hands of liars dates from the medieval period.
The mask became internationally famous following its appearance in the 1953 film Roman Holiday, in which Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck played out the hand-in-mouth test. Queues to insert your hand are constant. The church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin itself is worth visiting, a fine example of early medieval Roman architecture with a remarkable Cosmati marble floor and an ancient pagan altar inside.
Did you know? The Mouth of Truth was probably a Roman drain or sewer cover, one of the most glamorous repurposings of ancient plumbing infrastructure in history.
