About Vittoriano & Altare della Patria
Rome's most controversial modern monument, the enormous white marble 'Wedding Cake' completed in 1925, housing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and offering free rooftop panoramas.
The Vittoriano, officially the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, was built between 1885 and 1925 to celebrate the unification of Italy and honour its first king. The gleaming white Botticino limestone monument, nicknamed the 'Wedding Cake' or 'Typewriter' by Romans, dominates Piazza Venezia and is visible from almost everywhere in the historic centre.
The monument was highly controversial from its construction: an enormous area of the Capitoline Hill's medieval quarter was demolished to make way for it, and its architectural style, neo-Baroque eclecticism, was seen by many critics as bombastic and alien to Rome's palate. Romans coined the nickname 'False teeth' for the gleaming white limestone against Rome's warm terracotta tones.
At its heart is the Altare della Patria, the Altar of the Fatherland, where an eternal flame burns over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded day and night by military honours. Free lifts take visitors to a panoramic terrace at the top, offering what many consider the finest 360-degree view of Rome's historic centre.
Did you know? The Vittoriano is so large it contains a free museum, library, and panoramic lift inside, most visitors never realise there is a full cultural complex within the monument.
