About Pantheon

The best-preserved building of ancient Rome, with its breathtaking 43-metre unreinforced concrete dome open to the sky, still the world's largest of its kind for 1,300 years.

The Pantheon is the most perfectly preserved building of antiquity and one of the most influential structures ever built. The current temple was constructed by Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD, replacing earlier buildings on the same site. The portico of sixteen Corinthian granite columns still carries the inscription naming Marcus Agrippa, builder of the original 27 BC temple, Hadrian's characteristic modesty in preserving his predecessor's name.

The interior is a marvel of geometric perfection: the height from floor to the top of the oculus equals the diameter of the circular space, exactly 43.3 metres in both dimensions. The oculus, nine metres in diameter, is the building's only light source, projecting a moving circle of sunlight across the coffered dome as the day progresses. The dome was the largest in the world until 1436 when Brunelleschi surpassed it in Florence.

The Pantheon became a Christian church in 609 AD, which is why it survives intact. Raphael is buried here, along with two kings of unified Italy.

Did you know? The Pantheon's dome remained the world's largest until Brunelleschi completed the Florence Cathedral dome in 1436, a record of over 1,300 years.
